What should i expect from coffees from the Asia and the Pacific?
Coffee from the Asia and the Pacific are often have much more earthy and spicy flavours. For speciality coffee from this region of the coffee growing world, the main countries of interest are; Indonesia, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea, India and a growing market in China. The market for higher quality, speciality coffee from this region is much smaller to the commercial quality coffee that comes from the likes of Vietnam and India; who produce large amount of robusta coffee. The higher quality coffee that does come out of this region can have some quite unique flavour profiles, ranging from tropical fruits to more rich and bold chocolatey flavours.
High quality coffee production has started to increase from this traditionally, larger volume robusta region. With the likes of China, India and Timor Leste all starting to produce more and more, high quality and unique coffees! China's Yunnan province produces 95% of the nations coffee, with a steady increase in the export volume. Timor Leste is a really unique coffee growing nation, having the title of being one of the newest sovereign nation from 2002, a country emerging from years of turmoil, coffee plays a vital role in the nation. With coffee accounting for 1/3 of the populations primary source of income and its unique Timor hybrid varietal having fantastic disease resistance, the nation produces some amazing coffee.
Roasting Asian and Pacific coffees has no one unique profile! With the region producing a large amount of naturally processed coffee, as well as some very unique processing methods compared to the traditional washed and natural processes from Africa and the Americas, such as giling basah. This process is unique to Indonesia and is a mix of both the natural and washed process. If you enjoy heavy bodied coffees, or want to try something that is a bit different from your usual Brazilian coffee, some Asian coffees are a great place to start for something a bit more unique!

Sourcing
We partner with coffee importers we share our values in ethical sourcing and providing coffee with a sustainable future for producers and consumers. Our main importing partners are Covoya, Falcon, Sucafina, Primavera, Omwani and occasionally other importers who provide detailed levels of transparency on their coffee offerings. By partnering with coffee importers that have long standing relationships with small scale coffee producers, this provides financial and logistical support to small-scale coffee farmers. Our aim as a coffee roaster is to find out how we can source coffee that has the greatest benefit for the producers, with our goal in the future to develop more direct trading relationships where these merit a greater outcome for the coffee producers!
What does sustainability mean to us?
Sustainability has become a real buzzword in the coffee industry. For us, sustainability is at the heart of what we want to aim towards as a social enterprise, and this goes far beyond increasing the amount we recycle and minimising waste (although this is still very important). To maximise our impact, at Brew Crew we constantly consider sustainability throughout the entire supply chain, and assess where we can make a difference at each stage. So what exactly does this mean ?
Like the coffee we buy, our focus on sustainability has to begin at origin. This is often overlooked, but a large proportion of the carbon produced from coffee, is done so during farming and transportation. This is a big reason why our sourcing strategy is so important to us. By developing long-term trading relationships with farmers and cooperatives, and ensuring we pay well above Fairtrade prices, we can make sure that we give farmers the financial stability they need to be able to invest in sustainable farming practices and reduce their impact on the environment. To go even further, many of our projects also provide farms and cooperatives with additional means of reducing their impact on the environment at the heart of coffee production. By co-funding projects, such as our reforestation project with Copaíba in Brazil, we provide tangible impact to do our bit to ensure that the coffee industry, and the planet, is here to stay.
Once we have purchased our coffee for fair prices in sustainable trading relationships, and supported projects at origin, we minimise our impact on the environment wherever we can once it gets to us. None of our packaging needs to go to landfill, and is available in fully compostable or recyclable packaging. We also help our wholesale partners to operate sustainably From supplying the most energy efficient machines and providing fully compostable packaging, to encouraging more efficient barista work flow to minimise waste and cost, we do all we can to keep our waste and our impact on the environment as low as possible.

As a social enterprise, we commit 10% of our retail sales to support social and environmental projects in the regions we source our coffee from, showing you what every pound does, in meaningful numbers.
